Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 700 m.

Brazil (B).

South-eastern Brazil in coastal region from southern Sergipe south to Rio de Janeiro, extending inland in Minas Gerais (R Doce Valley); one probable sight record in extreme north-eastern S�o Paulo.

Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus) and Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) following SACC (2005).

Forms a superspecies with Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus) and Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and all formerly considered conspecific, with Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) traditionally included too.
