Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and dry forest. From 400 - 1,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil (B).

Central and eastern Brazil from eastern Maranhío, Ceará and Paraí­ba to northern Minas Gerais and western Bahia and from eastern and southern Mato Grosso and Goiás to northern Mato Grosso do Sul, extreme northern Paraná and western Sío Paulo.

Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus) and Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) following SACC (2005).

Forms a superspecies with Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) and all formerly considered conspecific, with Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) traditionally included too.
