Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus) and Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) following SACC (2005).

Formerly considered conspecific with Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus), but now thought not to belong in this group. Described form subcinereus (northern Colombia) is regarded as a clinal variant of nominate.
