Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus ) and Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha ) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus ), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus ), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni ) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus ) following SACC (2005).
Forms a superspecies with Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus ), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus ), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni ) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus ) and all formerly considered conspecific, with Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha ) traditionally included too. Subspecies leucogaster (with huallagae ) has sometimes been treated as a separate species. Subspecies huallagae was originally included in Amazonian Antshrike (Thamnophilus amazonicus ).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
punctatus (Shaw, 1809) - Eastern and southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar, Sucre, Monagas, Delta Amacuro), the Guianas, and Brazil north of R Amazon and east of R Negro (in north-eastern Amazonas, Roraima, northern Pará, Amapá); sight records from extreme eastern Amazonian Colombia (Guianía, Vaupés) probably this subspecies.
interpositus Hartert & Goodson, 1917 - Eastern base of Andes in western Venezuela (Táchira, Apure, Barinas) and Colombia (Boyacá, Meta, western Caquetá).
huallagae Carriker, 1934 - R Huallaga drainage in northern Peru (San Martín).
leucogaster Hellmayr, 1924 - R Marañón drainage in extreme southern Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe) and northern Peru (Amazonas, Cajamarca).
