Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest. From sea-level - 950 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia (B), Brazil (B), Paraguay (B).

Central and eastern Bolivia (Beni, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz), immediately adjacent Brazil (extreme western parts of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul) and northern Paraguay (Alto Paraguay).

Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus) and Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) following SACC (2005).

Forms a superspecies with Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) and all formerly considered conspecific, with Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) traditionally included too.

No subspecies.
