Subspecies
Thamnophilus punctatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus) and Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) following AOU (1998) and Natterer's Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) following SACC (2005).

Forms a superspecies with Northern Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus punctatus), Bolivian Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus sticturus), Planalto Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus pelzelni) and Sooretama Slaty Antshrike (Thamnophilus ambiguus) and all formerly considered conspecific, with Black-crowned Antshrike (Thamnophilus atrinucha) traditionally included too. Described subspecies saturatus and zimmeri (both central Brazil) represent clinal variation of nominate, with which merged.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • stictocephalus Pelzeln, 1869   -  Brazil south of R Amazon (from R Madeira east to Marajó I and R Tocantins, in Pará, and south-west to Rondônia and northern and western Mato Grosso) and extreme northern Bolivia (northern Beni).
  • parkeri Isler, ML, Isler, PR & Whitney, 1997   -  Extreme north-eastern Bolivia in northern Santa Cruz (Serranía de Huanchaca).
