Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Stripe-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus nuchalis), Fasciated Wren (Campylorhynchus fasciatus) and Band-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus zonatus). Sometimes treated as conspecific with Band-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus zonatus), with which it may hybridize in southern Colombia. Proposed subspecies aenigmaticus (from Nariño, in south-western Colombia) may be a hybrid between the two. Has also been treated as conspecific with Thrush-like Wren (Campylorhynchus turdinus), but differs distinctly in vocalizations.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
albobrunneus (Lawrence, 1862) - Panama, from Canal Zone east to western Darién.
harterti (von Berlepsch, 1907) - Eastern Panama (eastern Darién) and Pacific slope of Colombia (south to Valle).
