Proposed subspecies aenigmaticus (from south-western Colombia) of White-headed Wren (Campylorhynchus albobrunneus) sometimes included with present species. Probably a hybrid form.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • unicolor Lafresnaye, 1846   -  Lowlands of eastern Bolivia and adjacent Brazil, northern and central Paraguay and extreme northern Argentina (eastern Formosa).
  • turdinus (Wied, 1821)   -  Eastern Brazil (Maranhío, and Bahia south to Espírito Santo).
