Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with White-headed Wren (Campylorhynchus albobrunneus ), Stripe-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus nuchalis ) and Band-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus zonatus ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pallescens Lafresnaye, 1846 - South-western and southern Ecuador (southern from Guayas, including Puna I) south to northern Peru (Tumbes, northern Piura).
fasciatus (Swainson, 1837) - Arid coastal regions of Peru from Piura south to north-western Lima, probably also east of R Marañón (Amazonas south to Huánuco).
