Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with White-headed Wren (Campylorhynchus albobrunneus), Stripe-backed Wren (Campylorhynchus nuchalis) and Fasciated Wren (Campylorhynchus fasciatus). Sometimes considered conspecific with White-headed Wren (Campylorhynchus albobrunneus), and may hybridize with it in southern Colombia. Proposed subspecies aenigmaticus (from Nari�o, in south-western Colombia) is possibly a hybrid between them. Believed by some to be possibly closely related also to Grey-barred Wren (Campylorhynchus megalopterus) as ranges overlap but no evidence of interbreeding. Proposed subspecies panamensis (described from west-central Panama) very similar to, and intergrading with, costaricensis, considered better merged with latter.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

zonatus (Lesson, 1832) - Eastern Mexico (Puebla, Veracruz).
restrictus (Nelson, 1901) - Southern Mexico (southern Veracruz, northern Oaxaca) south to Guatemala and Belize.
vulcanius (Brodkorb, 1940) - Southern Mexico (Chiapas) south to Nicaragua.
costaricensis von Berlepsch, 1888 - Caribbean slope of Costa Rica south to west-central Panama.
curvirostris Ridgway, 1888 - Santa Marta region of northern Colombia.
brevirostris Lafresnaye, 1845 - Northern Colombia (except Santa Marta) to north-western Ecuador.
imparilis Borrero & Hern�ndez-Camacho, 1958 - North-eastern Colombian lowlands.
panamensis (Griscom, 1927) - Western Panama (Veraguas).
