Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical mangroves, heavily degraded former forest, urban areas, rural gardens, plantations. From sea-level - 800 m.

A long drawn song with a complex series of chirps and tweets, usually in pairs. Daytime calls very different, with wheezy chirps, buzzy notes, and whistles.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rotuma Myzomela (Myzomela chermesina), Wakolo Myzomela (Myzomela wakoloensis), Banda Myzomela (Myzomela boiei), Scarlet Honeyeater (Myzomela sanguinolenta), New Caledonian Myzomela (Myzomela caledonica), Sulawesi Myzomela (Myzomela chloroptera), Cardinal Myzomela (Myzomela cardinalis) and possibly Black-bellied Myzomela (Myzomela erythromelas). Limits of this superspecies not certain and require study, especially regarding inclusion of Black-bellied Myzomela (Myzomela erythromelas). Further, Red-headed Honeyeater (Myzomela erythrocephala), Sumba Myzomela (Myzomela dammermani), Crimson-hooded Myzomela (Myzomela kuehni) and Mountain Myzomela (Myzomela adolphinae) are closely related to the group, Black-breasted Myzomela (Myzomela vulnerata) also may be, and possibly Red-collared Myzomela (Myzomela rosenbergii) and the Red-capped Myzomela (Myzomela lafargei) superspecies should be included. Present species sometimes treated as conspecific with Cardinal Myzomela (Myzomela cardinalis), but differs in morphology and vocalizations. Birds of this species recorded on Sapwuahfik (Ngatik), near Pohnpei, of uncertain subspecies and provisionally included in dichromata.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

asuncionis Salomonsen, 1966 - Northern and central northern Mariana Is (Maug Is and Asuncion south to Anatahan).
saffordi Wetmore, 1917 - Southern northern Marianas (Saipan, Tinian, Aguijan, Rota; formerly also Guam).
kobayashii Momiyama, 1922 - Nearly all islands of Palau (from Kayangel south to Angaur).
kurodai Momiyama, 1922 - Yap, in western Caroline Is.
major Bonaparte, 1854 - Chuuk Is, including Nama, Losap and Mortlock Is (Namoluk, Ettal, Lukunor and Satawan atolls), in central Carolines.
dichromata Wetmore, 1919 - Pohnpei and nearby Sapwuahfik Atoll (Ngatik), in eastern Carolines.
rubratra (Lesson, 1827) - Kosrae, east of Pohnpei.
