Limits of this superspecies not certain and require study, especially regarding inclusion of Black-bellied Myzomela (Myzomela erythromelas). Further, Red-headed Honeyeater (Myzomela erythrocephala), Sumba Myzomela (Myzomela dammermani), Crimson-hooded Myzomela (Myzomela kuehni) and Mountain Myzomela (Myzomela adolphinae) are closely related to the group, Black-breasted Myzomela (Myzomela vulnerata) also may be, and possibly Red-collared Myzomela (Myzomela rosenbergii) and the Red-capped Myzomela (Myzomela lafargei) superspecies should be included. Present species sometimes treated as conspecific with Wakolo Myzomela (Myzomela wakoloensis) and Banda Myzomela (Myzomela boiei).

Proposed subspecies charlottae (from Latimodjong Mts, in central Sulawesi) considered inseparable from nominate. Birds of this species on Taliabu (in Sula Is) provisionally placed in nominate, but possibly represent an as yet undescribed subspecies.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • chloroptera Walden, 1872   -  Mountains of northern and central Sulawesi, and Sula Is (Taliabu).
  • juga Riley, 1921   -  Southern Sulawesi.
  • eva Meise, 1929   -  Salayar and Tanahjampea (southern of Sulawesi).
  • batjanensis Hartert, 1903   -  Bacan, off south-western Halmahera. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bacan Myzomela (Myzomela batjanensis).
  • charlottae Stresemann, 1932   -  Mts. of central and south-eastern Sulawesi.
