Salvadori, 1876

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, heavily degraded former forest, dry savanna, urban areas, rural gardens, plantations.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

Mountains of west, northern and eastern New Guinea (Vogelkop, central North Coastal Range, Central Highlands eastern from L Kopiago, Adelbert Mts, Huon Peninsula and south-east).

Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Closely related to the Cardinal Myzomela (Myzomela cardinalis) superspecies. Some reported variation between specimens from southern and south-eastern New Guinea and those from Huon Peninsula and Arfak Mts, with males of southern and south-eastern blacker on upperbody and upper breast but with lighter red head, and females also darker above and on breast. Further study is needed.
