Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Strong-billed Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes promeropirhynchus) despite some authors recognizing subspecies franciscanus as a subspecies of White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis) instead of Moustached Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes falcirostris), and others treating villanovae as a subspecies of Moustached Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes falcirostris) instead of White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis). Recent phylogenetic study based on morphology allied White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis) with Great Rufous Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes major) instead of Strong-billed Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes promeropirhynchus) but failed to include Moustached Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes falcirostris). Subspecies villanovae sometimes considered a separate species. Specimens from southern part of range of nominate subspecies, having more olive (less tawny) plumage and less rufous on rump, sometimes recognized as subspecies argentinus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
villanovae Lima, 1920 - Known only from vicinity of type locality in north-eastern Brazil (north-eastern Bahia).
bahiae Cory, 1919 - Eastern Brazil (eastern and central Bahia).
albicollis (Vieillot, 1818) - South-eastern and southern Brazil (southern Bahia, southern Goiás and Minas Gerais south to southern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, north-eastern Corrientes).
