Subspecies
Uncertain whether affinities closer to Strong-billed Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes promeropirhynchus) or to White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis). Subspecies franciscanus considered a full species by many authors and a subspecies ofWhite-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis) by some, but possibly not even a valid taxon. Subspecies villanovae of White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis) sometimes placed in present species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
falcirostris (Spix, 1824) - North-eastern Brazil from eastern Maranhío and Ceará east to western Paraíba and western Pernambuco, south to north-western Bahia.
franciscanus Snethlage, E, 1927 - Eastern Brazil, west of R Sío Francisco, in western Bahia and northern and north-western Minas Gerais; specimen allegedly collected in Paraná Valley (Goiás) now believed to have been mislabelled.
Similar Species
White-throated Woodcreeper (Xiphocolaptes albicollis) which is more olivaceous, and is heavily streaked and barred.
