Nominate subspecies and castaneus intergrade in northern Argentina. Individual variation in plumage possibly more marked than geographical variation.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaneus Ridgway, 1890   -  North-central and eastern Bolivia, south-western Brazil (Mato Grosso do Sul) and north-western Argentina (south-eastern Jujuy, northern Salta).
  • remoratus Pinto, 1945   -  South-western Mato Grosso, Brazil.
  • major (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Paraguay and northern Argentina (Jujuy, Salta and Formosa south to Córdoba and north-eastern Santa Fe).
  • estebani Cardoso da Silva, Novaes & Oren, 1991   -  Tucumán, in north-western Argentina.
