Breeding Season (Guide)
Does not breed in Australia. Breeds on tropical islands, raised coral atolls and rocky islets of the tropical and subtropical waters of the three major oceans.

Subspecies
Bannerman's Shearwater (Puffinus bannermani), Persian Shearwater (Puffinus persicus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) and Galapagos Shearwater (Puffinus subalaris) (SACC 2005) are lumped with Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri) following Brooke (2004).

Sometimes placed in Little Shearwater (Puffinus assimilis). Often includes Heinroth's Shearwater (Puffinus heinrothi).

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

  • lherminieri Lesson, 1839   -  Breeds throughout the Caribbean, on the Bahamas and formerly on Bermuda; ranges throughout the Caribbean and up the North American Atlantic coast up to southern Canada, with vagrants having been recorded off north-eastern Canada.
  • baroli (Bonaparte, 1857)   -  Azores, Desertas, Salvage and Canary islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mascarene Shearwater (Puffinus baroli).
  • boydi Mathews, 1912   -  Cape Verde Islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cape Verde Little Shearwater (Puffinus boydi).
  • persicus Hume, 1837   -  Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf, northern Indian Ocean, Comoros. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Persian Shearwater (Puffinus persicus).
  • temptator Louette and Herremans, 1985   -  Breeds on Mohéli (Comoros); ranges in western Indian Ocean around the northern end of Madagascar. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Persian Shearwater (Puffinus persicus).
  • bailloni (Bonaparte, 1857)   -  Breeds on Mascarene Islands (south-western Indian Ocean); ranges throughout the south-western Indian Ocean to the north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tropical Shearwater (Puffinus bailloni).
  • dichrous Finsch and Hartlaub, 1867   -  Breeds throughout central Polynesia and possibly Melanesia (Pacific) and the north-western Indian Ocean up to the Arabian Sea; ranges throughout the western Indian Ocean around the Equator, and in the central Pacific from the equatorial region to the Tropic of Capricorn. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Tropical Shearwater (Puffinus bailloni).
  • bannermani Mathews and Iredale, 1915   -  Breeds on Ogasawara Islands (north-western Pacific); ranges throughout the north-western Pacific from Japanese waters to the equatorial region. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bannerman's Shearwater (Puffinus bannermani).
  • gunax Mathews, 1930   -  Breeds on Banks Islands of Vanuatu (south-western Pacific); ranges throughout the south-western Pacific between the equatorial region and the Tropic of Capricorn. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Tropical Shearwater (Puffinus bailloni).
  • atrodorsalis Shirihai, Sinclair and Colston, 1995   -  Comoros, Isreal, South Africa. Some consider this idential to subspecies bailloni, others consider it a seperate species: see Mascarene Shearwater (Puffinus baroli).
  • subalaris Ridgway, 1897   -  Breeds Galapagos Islands. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Galapagos Shearwater (Puffinus subalaris).
  • loyemilleri Wetmore, 1959   -  Islets in south-western Caribbean.


Similar Species
In poor views with Fluttering Shearwater (Puffinus gavia) and Hutton's Shearwater (Puffinus huttoni).
