Subspecies
Currently under review by BirdLife International.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • bailloni (Bonaparte, 1857)   -  Breeds on Mascarene Islands (south-western Indian Ocean); ranges throughout the south-western Indian Ocean to the north of the Tropic of Capricorn. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri).
  • nicolae Jouanin, 1971   -  Islands of the north-western Indian Ocean.
  • colstoni Shirihai & Christie, 1996   -  Aldabra I.
  • dichrous Finsch & Hartlaub, 1867   -  Breeds throughout central Polynesia and possibly Melanesia (Pacific) and the north-western Indian Ocean up to the Arabian Sea; ranges throughout the western Indian Ocean around the Equator, and in the central Pacific from the equatorial region to the Tropic of Capricorn. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri).
  • gunax Mathews, 1930   -  Breeds on Banks Islands of Vanuatu (south-western Pacific); ranges throughout the south-western Pacific between the equatorial region and the Tropic of Capricorn. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus lherminieri).
  • bannermani Mathews & Iredale, 1915   -  Central. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bannerman's Shearwater (Puffinus bannermani).
