Subspecies
Coconut Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) and Red-collared Lorikeet (Trichoglossus rubritorquis) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Trichoglossus haematodus following Christidis and Boles (1994).
Forms a superspecies with Ornate Lorikeet (Trichoglossus ornatus). Three broad groups may be defined: (1) breast red and unbarred (first four subspecies listed below); (2) breast yellow or green without dark barring (fortis to flavotectus); and (3) breast red and in general heavily to faintly barred (rosenbergii through to moluccanus); rubritorquis might be considered to form a fourth group. New Guinean populations of nominate subspecies sometimes separated as subspecies berauensis. Proposed subspecies caeruleiceps probably not separable from nigrogularis.
Some consider subspecies rubritorquis, to be a full species Red-collared Lorikeet (Trichoglossus rubritorquis).
The following 20 subspecies are recognised:
mitchellii G. R. Gray, 1859 - Bali and Lombok. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Scarlet-breasted Lorikeet (Trichoglossus forsteni).
forsteni Bonaparte, 1850 - Sumbawa. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Scarlet-breasted Lorikeet (Trichoglossus forsteni).
djampeanus Hartert, 1897 - Tahanjampea. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Scarlet-breasted Lorikeet (Trichoglossus forsteni).
stresemanni Meise, 1929 - Kalaotoa. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Scarlet-breasted Lorikeet (Trichoglossus forsteni).
fortis Hartert, 1898 - Sumba. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Marigold Lorikeet (Trichoglossus capistratus).
weberi (Büttikofer, 1894) - Flores. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Flores Lorikeet (Trichoglossus weberi).
capistratus (Bechstein, 1811) - Timor. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Marigold Lorikeet (Trichoglossus capistratus).
flavotectus Hellmayr, 1914 - Wetar and Roma. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Marigold Lorikeet (Trichoglossus capistratus).
rosenbergii Schlegel, 1873 - Biak I, off northern Irian Jaya. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Biak Lorikeet (Trichoglossus rosenbergii).
intermedius Rothschild and Hartert, 1901 - New Guniea from Sepak Ranges to Astrolabe Bay and Manam Island.
haematodus (Linnaeus, 1771) - Southern Moluccas and western Papuan Is east to north-western New Guinea as far as Humboldt Bay and southern New Guinea as far as upper R Fly; possibly western Kai Is.
nigrogularis Gray, GR, 1858 - Eastern Kai Is, Aru Is (except Spirit I) and southern New Guinea from lower R Fly to Princess Marianne Straits.
brooki Ogilvie-Grant, 1907 - Spirit I, Aru Is.
micropteryx Stresemann, 1922 - Eastern New Guinea eastern from Huon Peninsula in north, including Bagabag I, and Hall Sound in South.
nesophilus Neumann, 1929 - Ninigo and Hermit Groups, west of Manus.
flavicans Cabanis & Reichenow, 1876 - Admiralty Is and New Hanover.
massena Bonaparte, 1854 - Karkar I, Bismarck Archipelago, Solomon Is and Vanuatu.
deplanchii Verreaux, J & Des Murs, 1860 - New Caledonia and Loyalty Is.
moluccanus (J. F. Gmelin, 1788) - Torres Strait islands, eastern and south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus).
rubritorquis Vigors and Horsfield, 1827 - Eastern Lesser Sundas to northern Australia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Red-collared Lorikeet (Trichoglossus rubritorquis).
