Subspecies
Molecular-genetic data indicate that this species, Black-capped Tanager (Tangara heinei), Sira Tanager (Tangara phillipsi) and Silver-backed Tanager (Tangara viridicollis) form a species group, and that Azure-shouldered Tanager (Tangara cyanoptera) is sister to this group. Sympatric with very similar Silver-backed Tanager (Tangara viridicollis) at Panguri, in southern Ecuador. Most of the characters ascribed to subspecies caeruleigularis appear to have little or no value, and species may be better treated as monotypic.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- caeruleigularis Carriker, 1935 - Extreme south-eastern Ecuador (southern Zamora-Chinchipe) and northern and central Peru (eastern slope of Andes in Amazonas and San Martín, also a few scattered records Junín and Pasco).
- argyrofenges (Sclater & Salvin, 1876) - Eastern slope of Andes in Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and western Santa Cruz).
Similar Species
This species forms an apparent species group with Black-capped Tanager (Tangara heinei), Silver-backed Tanager (Tangara viridicollis) and Sira Tanager (Tangara phillipsi) and the females are particularly similar. The males of the other three species lack the straw-coloured mantle, breast sides and flanks of Straw-backed Tanager (Tangara argyrofenges). Female Straw-backed Tanager (Tangara argyrofenges) have a more straw-yellow coloured mantle and rump than the other species and are overall more yellow-green than dull green.
