Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).
Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through gold and copper mining and small-scale logging is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Molecular-genetic data indicate that this species, Black-capped Tanager (Tangara heinei), Sira Tanager (Tangara phillipsi), Silver-backed Tanager (Tangara viridicollis) and Straw-backed Tanager (Tangara argyrofenges) form a species group, and that Azure-shouldered Tanager (Tangara cyanoptera) is sister to this group. Thought to form a superspecies with Black-capped Tanager (Tangara heinei). Has been suggested that the two might be better treated as conspecific, but most authors argue that, because of the wide geographical distance between them, as well as plumage differences, they are best regarded as separate species.
Similar Species
Differs from very similar Black-capped Tanager (Tangara heinei) in being darker (especially male, which has lower breast and central belly heavily washed black). Female differs from heinei principally in having darker grey breast and belly.
