Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 600 - 2,000 m.
Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Molecular-genetic data indicate that this species is sister to a species group formed by Black-capped Tanager (Tangara heinei), Sira Tanager (Tangara phillipsi), Silver-backed Tanager (Tangara viridicollis) and Straw-backed Tanager (Tangara argyrofenges). Subspecies are geographically isolated from each other and differ somewhat in plumage and habitat. Possible separate species status merits investigation.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- cyanoptera (Swainson, 1834) - Northern Colombia (Santa Marta Mts, and both slopes of eastern Andes at northern end), Sierra de Perijá, and western and northern Venezuela (Andes from Lara south to Táchira, mountains of central Falcón and Yaracuy, and northern cordilleras from Carabobo east to Sucre and Monagas).
- whitelyi (Salvin & Godman, 1884) - Tepuis of southern Venezuela (in Amazonas and Bolívar), and adjacent northern Brazil (Uei-tepui) and Guyana (Twek-quay). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-hooded Tanager (Tangara whitelyi).
