Subspecies
Genetic data indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that includes also Blue-whiskered Tanager (Tangara johannae), Green-and-gold Tanager (Tangara schrankii), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Chestnut-breasted Tanager (Tangara arthus), Silver-throated Tanager (Tangara icterocephala), Saffron-crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala) and Golden-eared Tanager (Tangara chrysotis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • lunigera (Sclater, PL, 1851)   -  Pacific slope of western Andes from Colombia (southern from Risaralda) south to western slope in Ecuador (south to El Oro). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Yellow-faced Tanager (Tangara lunigera).
  • parzudakii (Lafresnaye, 1843)   -  South-western Venezuela (Andes of south-eastern Táchira); eastern Andes of Colombia (western slope from Santander to Cundinamarca and head of Magdalena Valley in Huila; eastern slope probably throughout, but recorded only Meta, Caquetá, Putumayo and Nariño) and eastern slope in Ecuador.
  • urubambae Zimmer, JT, 1943   -  Urubamba Valley and Amazonian drainage, in south-eastern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Blue-grey Tanager (Tangara episcopus).
