Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,300 - 2,600 m,, occasionally 1,100 - 3,150 m.

Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Genetic data indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that includes also Blue-whiskered Tanager (Tangara johannae), Green-and-gold Tanager (Tangara schrankii), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Chestnut-breasted Tanager (Tangara arthus), Silver-throated Tanager (Tangara icterocephala), Golden-eared Tanager (Tangara chrysotis) and Flame-faced Tanager (Tangara parzudakii).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • venusta (Sclater, PL, 1855)   -  Western Venezuela (both slopes of Sierra de Perijá; Andes from southern Lara south to southern Táchira), Colombia (both slopes of western and central Andes, locally both slopes of eastern Andes, and Macarena Mts) and Ecuador (both slopes) south to northern and central Peru (eastern slope of eastern Andes from Cajamarca south to northern Pasco).
  • xanthocephala (Tschudi, 1844)   -  Eastern slope of Andes in central Peru (Chanchamayo region).
  • lamprotis (Sclater, PL, 1851)   -  Eastern slope in south-eastern Peru (Ayacucho and Cuzco) south to Bolivia (to western Santa Cruz).
