Subspecies
Genetic data indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that includes also Blue-whiskered Tanager (Tangara johannae), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Chestnut-breasted Tanager (Tangara arthus), Silver-throated Tanager (Tangara icterocephala), Saffron-crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala), Golden-eared Tanager (Tangara chrysotis) and Flame-faced Tanager (Tangara parzudakii). Taxon anchicayae, described from mountains above R Anchicayá, in Valle (Colombia), erroneously as a subspecies of present species, is now known to be referable to Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • venezuelana Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1957   -  Southern and south-eastern Venezuela (eastern and southern Amazonas and southern Bolívar from upper R Caura east to upper R Caroní).
  • schrankii (Spix, 1825)   -  South-eastern Colombia (from Caquetá and Vaupés) south through eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru to east-central Bolivia (Santa Cruz), and eastern in Brazil (mostly south of R Amazon) to eastern Amazonas and extreme north-western Mato Grosso.
  • anchicayae Lehmann, V, 1957   -  Western slope of western Andes of Colombia (Río Anchicayá).
