Subspecies
Genetic data indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that includes also Blue-whiskered Tanager (Tangara johannae), Green-and-gold Tanager (Tangara schrankii), Emerald Tanager (Tangara florida), Chestnut-breasted Tanager (Tangara arthus), Saffron-crowned Tanager (Tangara xanthocephala), Golden-eared Tanager (Tangara chrysotis) and Flame-faced Tanager (Tangara parzudakii).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

frantzii (Cabanis, 1861) - Northern Costa Rica southern on both slopes of mountains to western Panama (Veraguas).
oresbia Wetmore, 1962 - Mountains of west-central Panama (Cocl� and western Panam�).
icterocephala (Bonaparte, 1851) - Mountains of Pacific slope of extreme eastern Panama (eastern Dari�n), and Andes of Colombia (western slope of central range in Antioquia; western slope of western range southern from Antioquia) and western Ecuador (south to El Oro and western Loja); possibly also north-eastern Peru (eastern Tumbes).
