Subspecies
Based on molecular-genetic studies this species forms a monophyletic clade with Seven-colored Tanager (Tangara fastuosa), Green-headed Tanager (Tangara seledon), Gilt-edged Tanager (Tangara cyanoventris) and Brassy-breasted Tanager (Tangara desmaresti).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

cearensis Cory, 1916 - Cear�, in north-eastern Brazil.
corallina (von Berlepsch, 1903) - Pernambuco and adjacent northern Bahia, in eastern Brazil.
cyanocephala (M�ller, 1776) - South-eastern Brazil (from Esp��rito Santo south to Rio Grande do Sul), south-eastern Paraguay (Canindey�) and adjacent north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
