Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 900 m, occasionally up to 1,100 m.

Range (Guide)

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay.

South-eastern Brazil (from south-eastern Bahia south to Santa Catarina and north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul) and adjacent parts of south-eastern Paraguay (Alto Paran�) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Recent molecular-genetic studies suggest that this species and Seven-colored Tanager (Tangara fastuosa) are likely sister-species and form a monophyletic clade with Gilt-edged Tanager (Tangara cyanoventris), Red-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanocephala) and Brassy-breasted Tanager (Tangara desmaresti).
