Recent molecular-genetic studies suggest that this species and Green-headed Tanager (Tangara seledon) are likely sister-species and form a monophyletic clade with Gilt-edged Tanager (Tangara cyanoventris), Red-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanocephala) and Brassy-breasted Tanager (Tangara desmaresti). Although apparently illustrated as early as 1648, not formally described until 183 years later.
