Serinus xanthopygius (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Yellow-rumped Seedeater (Crithagra xanthopygia) and Salvadori's Seedeater (Crithagra xantholaema) following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Forms a superspecies, and formerly treated as conspecific, with Yellow-throated Seedeater (Crithagra flavigula) and both have been treated as conspecific with Black-throated Canary (Crithagra atrogularis). Was previously considered a hybrid between Yellow-rumped Seedeater (Crithagra xanthopygia) and Yellow-fronted Canary (Crithagra mozambica) or White-bellied Canary (Crithagra dorsostriata), or a mutation of Reichenow's Seedeater (Crithagra reichenowi). Geographical variation problematic and insufficiently known, and position further confused by population on Mt Fantalle (central Ethiopia), which intermediate in characters between present species and Yellow-throated Seedeater (Crithagra flavigula). Provisionally considered a separate species pending further research, including analysis of mitochondrial DNA.
