Vagrant to Lesotho.

Introduced to Mauritius (B), Puerto Rico (B), Réunion (B), Seychelles (B), USA (B).

Subspecies
Birds on São Tomé, previously separated as subspecies santhome, were introduced on that island in late 19th century and exhibit features within range of variation of mainland tando.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • caniceps (d'Orbigny, 1839)   -  Extreme southern Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia south to northern Sierra Leone and east to Nigeria and northern Cameroon.
  • punctigula (Reichenow, 1898)   -  Central and southern Cameroon.
  • barbatus (Heuglin, 1864)   -  Southern Chad, Central African Republic and western and southern Sudan south to eastern DRCongo, Uganda, south-western Kenya and north-western and central Tanzania.
  • grotei (Sclater, WL & Mackworth-Praed, 1931)   -  Eastern Sudan and western and south-western Ethiopia.
  • gommaensis (Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1945)   -  Central and north-western Ethiopia and western Eritrea.
  • tando (Sclater, WL & Mackworth-Praed, 1918)   -  São Tomé, Gabon, PR Congo, western and southern DRCongo and Angola.
  • samaliyae (White, CMN, 1947)   -  South-eastern DRCongo, south-western Tanzania and north-eastern Zambia.
  • vansoni (Roberts, 1932)   -  Extreme south-eastern Angola and north-eastern Namibia east to south-western Zambia.
  • mozambicus (Müller, 1776)   -  Eastern Kenya south to central and southern Mozambique, Zimbabwe, eastern and south-eastern Botswana and north-eastern South Africa (Limpopo and North West Province south to Free State).
  • granti (Clancey, 1957)   -  Extreme southern Mozambique, eastern Swaziland and eastern South Africa (Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal south to southern eastern Cape).
