Subspecies
Relationships uncertain; may form a clade with Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii), Short-billed Pipit (Anthus furcatus), Correndera Pipit (Anthus correndera), South Georgia Pipit (Anthus antarcticus), Hellmayr's Pipit (Anthus hellmayri) and Paramo Pipit (Anthus bogotensis). Form "Anthus chii" might be referable to present species, but best considered unidentifiable.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • parvus Lawrence, 1865   -  Pacific slope in western Panama.
  • lutescens Pucherna, 1855   -  North-eastern Colombia, Venezuela (except northern and south), the Guianas, and lowlands from eastern Bolivia and north, central and eastern Brazil south to Argentina (south to La Pampa and south-eastern Buenos Aires) and Uruguay.
  • peruvianus Nicholson, 1878   -  Coastal Peru (southern from Trujillo) south to extreme northern Chile (Arica). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Peruvian Pipit (Anthus peruvianus).
