Subspecies
Molecular-genetic analyses suggest possible close relationship with Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii), Hellmayr's Pipit (Anthus hellmayri) and Paramo Pipit (Anthus bogotensis). May form a clade with those and with Yellowish Pipit (Anthus lutescens), Correndera Pipit (Anthus correndera) and South Georgia Pipit (Anthus antarcticus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

brevirostris Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny, 1837 - Central Peru south to western Bolivia and north-western Argentina (Jujuy).
furcatus Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny, 1837 - Lowlands of Argentina (Tucum�n south to northern Chubut) east to extreme south-eastern Brazil and Uruguay.
