Subspecies
Molecular-genetic analyses suggest possible close relationship with Sprague's Pipit (Anthus spragueii), Short-billed Pipit (Anthus furcatus) and Hellmayr's Pipit (Anthus hellmayri) and all may belong to a clade that also includes Yellowish Pipit (Anthus lutescens), Correndera Pipit (Anthus correndera), South Georgia Pipit (Anthus antarcticus).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • meridae Zimmer, JT, 1953   -  Andes in north-western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida, northern Táchira).
  • bogotensis Sclater, 1855   -  North-western Venezuela (Páramo de Tamá, in southern Táchira) and Andes from Colombia (northern and southern parts of central range, also eastern range south to Cundinamarca) south to northern Peru (Cajamarca).
  • immaculatus Cory, 1916   -  North-central Peru south to Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
  • shiptoni (Chubb, C, 1923)   -  North-western Argentina (Tucumán).
