Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rota White-eye (Zosterops rotensis), Bridled White-eye (Zosterops conspicillatus) and Yap Plain White-eye (Zosterops hypolais) and all formerly considered conspecific, but differ in plumage, vocalizations and behaviour, and treatment as separate species supported by DNA-DNA hybridization and analyses of mitochondrial DNA. Geographical variation minimal, but subspecies separated by large geographical distances.

owstoni Hartert, 1900 - Chuuk (high islands
within the atoll: Weno, Udot, Fefan, Fana, Dublon, Uman and
Fanabeguets), in eastern Caroline Is.
takatsukasai Momiyama, 1922 - Pohnpei I, in east-central Caroline
Is.
