Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Dusky White-eye (Zosterops finschii) and previously treated as conspecific, but differs in voice and behaviour. Both are distinctive, and may well merit treatment as separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ponapensis (Kittlitz, 1832) - Pohnpei, in east-central Caroline Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pohnpei White-eye (Zosterops ponapensis).
cinereus (Kittlitz, 1832) - Kosrae, in eastern Caroline Is.
