Subspecies
Grey Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus caroli) and Buff-bellied Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus sylviella) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Anthoscopus caroli following Dowsett and Forbes-Watson (1993).
Subspecies can be divided into five groups, "nominate group" (incorporating also hellmayri, robertsi and winterbottomi), "ansorgei group" (with rhodesiae and pallescens), "sylviella group" (with sharpei), and two single-species "groups" consisting of, respectively, roccatii and rankinei. The "ansorgei group" (in which ansorgei intergrades with rhodesiae) and the "sylviella group" sometimes treated as two additional species, latter exhibiting apparent vocal differences from others; in addition, occurrence of rankinei close to other subspecies (hellmayri and robertsi) with no signs of intergradation suggests that this subspecies, too, may warrant treatment as separate species.
Other proposed subspecies are rothschildi (described from Simba, in central Kenya), which is synonymized with sylviella, and taruensis (from Samburu, in coastal Kenya), synonymized with robertsi; supposed differentiating characters of both forms are insignificant.
The following 11 subspecies are recognised:
ansorgei Hartert, 1905 - Northern and south-eastern PRCongo, western DRCongo and central Angola.
roccatii Salvadori, 1906 - Uganda and western Kenya south to eastern Burundi and extreme north-western Tanzania.
pallescens Ulfstrand, 1960 - Western Tanzania (Kungwe-Mahali Peninsula).
rhodesiae Sclater, WL, 1932 - South-eastern DRCongo, northern Zambia and south-western Tanzania.
caroli (Sharpe, 1871) - Southern Angola, northern Namibia, south-western Zambia and Botswana.
sylviella Reichenow, 1904 - South-central Kenya south to north-eastern and central Tanzania. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Buff-bellied Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus sylviella).
sharpei Hartert, 1905 - South-western Kenya south to northern Tanzania.
