Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sennar Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus punctifrons), Yellow Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus parvulus), Mouse-coloured Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus musculus) and Grey Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus caroli). Possibly closest to A. parvulus, which may be its northern counterpart. Geographical variation somewhat clinal, plumage colour darkening from north to south.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • damarensis Reichenow, 1905   -  Central-western and south-western Angola, northern Namibia, much of Botswana (except south-west) and western and central Zimbabwe south to northern South Africa (Limpopo Province).
  • minutus (Shaw & Nodder, 1812)   -  Western and southern Namibia, south-western Botswana and western and central South Africa (south to western Cape, east to north-western Free State and Mpumalanga).
  • gigi Winterbottom, 1959   -  Southern South Africa (south-western Free State south to western eastern Cape).
