Geographical variation sometimes considered to be clinal, and complicated by effects of plumage wear. Species treated by some authorities as monotypic.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • senegalensis (Heuglin, 1864)   -  Extreme southern Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia and Guinea Bisseau east to northern Benin, northern Nigeria (east to western and southern areas of L Chad), northern Cameroon (Bénoué National Park) and western Central African Republic.
  • aureus Bannerman, 1939   -  North-western Ghana (Bole).
  • parvulus (Heuglin, 1864)   -  Southern Chad (southern and eastern from eastern shores of L Chad), southern Sudan and northern DRCongo, possibly also extreme north-western Uganda.
