Subspecies
Has been considered a member of the superspecies formed by Sennar Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus punctifrons), Yellow Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus parvulus), Mouse-coloured Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus musculus), Grey Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus caroli) and Cape Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus minutus), but structural features, plumage coloration and rainforest habitat all suggest more distant affinities than exist among those five. Subspecies waldronae initially named "waldroni", but this is an incorrect original spelling.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • waldronae Bannerman, 1935   -  Northern Liberia (northern Lofa County, Mt Nimba), southern Ivory Coast (forests of Taí¯, Fresco and Yapo) and south-western Ghana (Goaso and Kakum forests).
  • flavifrons (Cassin, 1855)   -  South-eastern Nigeria (Itu and Umuagwu), southern Cameroon (Lolodorf, Elat and Aboulou), Equatorial Guinea (Mbini), northern Gabon (Belinga, M'Bes, Makokou, M'Passa and Moondah estuary), northern and south-western PRCongo (Odzala and Nouabale-Ndoki National Parks; Kouilou) and northern DRCongo (Equateur and Orientale Provinces).
  • ruthae Chapin, 1958   -  Eastern DRCongo (south-eastern Kivu).
