Zoothera margaretae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Makira Thrush (Zoothera margaretae) and Guadalcanal Thicketbird (Megalurulus turipavae) following Cain and Galbraith (1956).

Forms a group, possibly a superspecies, with Sri Lanka Thrush (Zoothera imbricata), Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata), Russet-tailed Thrush (Zoothera heinei), Fawn-breasted Thrush (Zoothera machiki), New Britain Thrush (Zoothera talaseae), Makira Thrush (Zoothera margaretae), Scaly Thrush (Zoothera dauma), Long-billed Thrush (Zoothera monticola) and Dark-sided Thrush (Zoothera marginata), perhaps including also Alpine Thrush (Zoothera mollissima) and Long-tailed Thrush (Zoothera dixoni).

Often treated as conspecific with Makira Thrush (Zoothera margaretae). Has also been treated as a subspecies of New Britain Thrush (Zoothera talaseae), but this very inappropriate on basis of plumage.

Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Santo Thicketbird (Megalurulus whitneyi).

Similar Species
Island Thrush (Turdus poliocephalus) which is plain brown with a yellow bill, eye-ring and legs, Juveniles are duller with irregular tawny and orange spots.
