Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane forest. From 600 - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

Umboi, New Britain and Bougainville islands in Papua New Guinea (B).
 
Rarity Status
Currently this species is not classified as a rarity in this country OR information has not been updated.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status LC
Predation by introduced mammals is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms a group, possibly a superspecies, with Sri Lanka Thrush (Zoothera imbricata), Bassian Thrush (Zoothera lunulata), Russet-tailed Thrush (Zoothera heinei), Fawn-breasted Thrush (Zoothera machiki), Scaly Thrush (Zoothera dauma), Makira Thrush (Zoothera margaretae), Guadalcanal Thicketbird (Megalurulus turipavae), Long-billed Thrush (Zoothera monticola) and Dark-sided Thrush (Zoothera marginata), perhaps including also Alpine Thrush (Zoothera mollissima) and Long-tailed Thrush (Zoothera dixoni).

Often considered to embrace Makira Thrush (Zoothera margaretae) and Guadalcanal Thicketbird (Megalurulus turipavae), but differs from both significantly in plumage. Subspecies atrigena distinctive, possibly a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • talaseae (Rothschild & Hartert, 1926)   -  New Britain and Umboi I.
  • atrigena Ripley & Hadden, 1982   -  Bougainville I. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Bougainville Thrush (Zoothera atrigena).
