Predation by feral cats, rats and grazing by feral sheep are the main threats. Introduced predatory birds such as Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) and Common Myna (Acridotheres tristis) are also threats. Estimated population is 150 - 250 (2010) and stable.

Subspecies
Pomarea mendozae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Marquesas Monarch (Pomarea mendozae), Ua Pou Monarch (Pomarea mira) and Nuku Hiva Monarch (Pomarea nukuhivae) following Cibois et al. (2004).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
mendozae! (Hartlaub, 1854) - Hiva Oa (extinct), Tahuata (extinct).
motanensis Murphy & Mathews, 1928 - Mohotani.
nukuhivae! Murphy and Mathews, 1928 - Formerly Marquesas Islands (Nuku Hiva); extinct, last reported in the 1930s.
mira! Murphy and Mathews, 1928 - Marquesas Islands (Ua Pou); critically endangered, if not extinct.
