Status EX
Considered not common in 1922. It was considered rare in the 1930s, the last confirmed sightings and is presumed extinct. Extinction presumably due to habitat destruction by grazing, clearing and fire and also predation by introduced rats.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Pomarea mendozae (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Marquesas Monarch (Pomarea mendozae), Ua Pou Monarch (Pomarea mira) and Nuku Hiva Monarch (Pomarea nukuhivae) following Cibois et al. (2004).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Marquesas Monarch (Pomarea mendozae).
