Habitat
Large freshwater lakes, rivers, streams, creeks. Also, subtropical and tropical lowland moist shrubland, heavily degraded former forest, plantations.

Range (Guide)

Indonesia (B), Papua New Guinea (B).

New Guinea at scattered localities from Weyland Mts and southern slopes of Snow Mts east to upper R Fly, Ok Tedi, Telefomin, R Nomad, middle R Sepik, upper R Ramu, L Kopiago, Nembi Valley, and a few localities in mountains of south-eastern (including Garaina and Naoro).

A member of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus), Bare-throated Whistler (Pachycephala nudigula), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror), Lorentz's Whistler (Pachycephala lorentzi), Regent Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii), Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala implicata), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica), Tongan Whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons) and Mangrove Golden Whistler (Pachycephala melanura).
