Subspecies
A member of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror), Lorentz's Whistler (Pachycephala lorentzi), Regent Whistler (Pachycephala schlegelii), Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala implicata), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica), Tongan Whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons), Mangrove Golden Whistler (Pachycephala melanura) and Golden-backed Whistler (Pachycephala aurea).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- nudigula Hartert, 1897 - Flores, in west-central Lesser Sundas.
- ilsa Rensch, 1928 - Sumbawa, in western Lesser Sunda Is.
