Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Lorentz's Whistler (Pachycephala lorentzi ), but found to occur sympatrically with that species. Both are members of a species group that includes also Fawn-breasted Whistler (Pachycephala orpheus ), Bare-throated Whistler (Pachycephala nudigula ), Vogelkop Whistler (Pachycephala meyeri ), Sclater's Whistler (Pachycephala soror ), Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler (Pachycephala implicata ), Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis ), New Caledonian Whistler (Pachycephala caledonica ), Tongan Whistler (Pachycephala jacquinoti ), Samoan Whistler (Pachycephala flavifrons ), Mangrove Golden Whistler (Pachycephala melanura ) and Golden-backed Whistler (Pachycephala aurea ). Racial identity of birds in Kumawa Mts (Bomberai Peninsula) and Torricelli Mts (North Coastal Range) uncertain and provisionally included in, respectively, nominate subspecies and obscurior .
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
schlegelii Schlegel, 1871 - Mountains of Vogelkop (Tamrau Mts, Arfak Mts) and Bomberai Peninsula (Kumawa Mts) and Wandammen Mts, in north-western New Guinea.
cyclopum E. J. O. Hartert, 1930 - Cyclops Mts, in north-central New Guinea.
obscurior Hartert, 1896 - Mountain ranges of New Guinea eastern from Weyland Mts, including North Coastal Range (Torricelli Mts), Huon Peninsula (Saruwaged Mts) and south-eastern peninsula.
