Habitat
Stony terrain with open or low dense Mulga shrubland, with a low shrubby understorey.

Usually singly or in twos, occasionally in small family groups.

Thin, high-pitched, ventriloquial. Also a tuneful, two-note rhythmic whistle.

Nest
A depression in the ground, lined with strips of bark and leaves, usually sheltered by a dead bush.

Eggs (Guide)
2 or 3; pale- to buff-grey, peppered with brown and underlying blue-grey spots; oblong-oval; about 29 x 20 mm. Incubation: by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Probably fed by female only.

Subspecies
Subspecies marginatum was sometimes treated within Cinnamon Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma cinnamomeum), and subspecies alisteri of Cinnamon Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma cinnamomeum) has sometimes been regarded as a subspecies of Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma castaneothorax).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • castaneothorax Gould, 1849   -  Central Great Artesian Basin, in the area bounded by Forsythe Range, central Qld, in the north, Upper Barcoo, Bulloo and Paroo - Warrego River Drainages, central Qld, in the east, mulga-eucalypt line in central Darling River Basin, New South Wales in the south, and central Lake Eyre Basin, north-western New South Wales - south-western Qld in the west.
  • marginatum Sharpe, 1883   -  Central-western Australia, from southern Pilbara and Lower Murchison Rivers, WA north to southern rim of the Great sandy and Gibson Deserts, WA, east to south-western centralian ranges, NT, and south to northern rim of the Great Victorian Desert and northern Goldfields Region, WA. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma marginatum).
