Subspecies
Subspecies alisteri often regarded as a separate species, and in the past was sometimes treated as a subspecies of Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma castaneothorax). Conversely, subspecies marginatum of Chestnut-breasted Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma castaneothorax) has sometimes been included within present species.
Subspecies tirariense doubtfully separable from nominate, the two intergrading in a broad zone. The described subspecies samueli (from South Australia) regarded as inseparable from nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cinnamomeum Gould, 1846 - Northern Gawler Ranges and north-western Eyre Peninsula, SA, north and north-east to the upper Finke River Drainage, Simpson - Strzelecki Deserts and Birdsville - Bedourie, NT - Qld, western and eastern fringes of central and northern Flinders Ranges and lake Eyre and lake Frome Basins, SA, north-western New South Wales and far south-western Qld.
alisteri Mathews, 1910 - Nullarbor Plain, SA - WA. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Nullarbor Quail-thrush (Cinclosoma alisteri).
tirariense Schodde & Mason, IJ, 1999 - Deserts of east-central Australia (south-eastern northern Territory, north-western South Australia, central-western Queensland).
