Subspecies
Chloropsis cochinchinensis (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Javan Leafbird (Chloropsis cochinchinensis), Bornean Leafbird (Chloropsis kinabaluensis) and Jerdon's Leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni) following Wells et al. (2003).

Probably forms a superspecies with Jerdon's Leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni), Bornean Leafbird (Chloropsis kinabaluensis) and Yellow-throated Leafbird (Chloropsis palawanensis) and until recently was regarded as conspecific with Jerdon's Leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni) and Bornean Leafbird (Chloropsis kinabaluensis). The name nigricollis, long used for the Javan (nominate) subspecies, has no designated type or type locality, and therefore no formal taxonomic standing. Described subspecies icterocephala (from Sumatra), billitonis (Belitung) and natunensis (Natuna Is) considered better merged with moluccensis.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • chlorocephala (Walden, 1871)   -  Extreme eastern Bangladesh and north-eastern India (Assam) east to Myanmar and western Thailand.
  • kinneari Hall, BP & Deignan, 1956   -  Southern China (southern Yunnan), northern Indochina and north-eastern Thailand.
  • auropectus Wells, DR, Dickinson & Dekker, 2003   -  South-eastern Thailand and southern Indochina.
  • serithai Deignan, 1946   -  Northern Malay Peninsula.
  • moluccensis Gray, JE, 1831   -  Southern Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and satellites and northern Natuna Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Blue-winged Leafbird (Chloropsis moluccensis).
  • viridinucha (Sharpe, 1877)   -  Borneo (except far north).
  • cochinchinensis (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Java.
  • icterocephala (Gmelin, JF, 1789)   -  Sumatra.
  • natunensis Chasen, 1938   -  Natuna Islands (China Sea).
  • billitonis Chasen, 1937   -  Belitung I. (off Borneo).
